The Priory is nestled within the historic town of Caerleon on the River Usk. Dating back to 1180 and starting life as a Cistercian Monastery, it later became a Nunnery, private residence and since 1996, this beautiful building and its secluded grounds have been home to The Priory Hotel and Restaurant. As a family owned business, we want your stay with us to be relaxing, enjoyable and focused on fantastic food and drink. 75AD Roman conquest of Wales

Following the Roman conquest of Wales, taking control of Caerleon from the Silures tribe, Caerleon is chosen as a site of one of the three permanent legionary fortresses in Roman Britain.


12th Century

The Priory becomes a cistercian monastery.


1270 Norman Revolt

Caerleon falls into Norman hands and Gilbert de Clare embarks on a renovation of the castle, rebuilding it in stone and extending its grounds.


1402 Welsh Revolt

Caerleon Castle is taken by Rhys Gethin, General for Owain Glyndwr, as part of the Welsh revolt.


16th Century

Earliest official mentions of The Priory.

Henry Morgan becomes High Sheriff of Monmouthshire.


18th Century

Mary Morgan gives The Priory the Gothic appearance it still holds today.


19th Century

Ownership passes to Thomas Hooper.

Sir Digby Mackworth becomes its first new owner.

The amateur antiquarian J. E. Lee becomes tenant.


20th Century

Miss Ethil Radcliffe becomes tenant.


Present Day

Hotel and restaurant owned and run by the Martinez Family.
